This one is pretty basic, I just wanted a definitive list of spells that Granite Idol stops. As usual, first thing to do is see exactly what the card says in-game.
Granite Idol (S) (NC)
ST:0 HP:20 G:60
Item Limit: xWeapon xScroll
Defensive
Global Ability: All Cepters cannot be targeted by Single Effect spells or Single Effect territory abilities (except for those that dispel Enchantment effects).
And here's the list:
Spells
Capture
Changeling
Corruption
Crusher
Drain Magic
Echo
Fear
Forfeit
Gift
Grace
Land Drain
Pain
Poison Mind
Revival
Squeeze
Subsidience
Suppression
Theft
Word of Recall
Territory Abilities
Clockwork Owl
Heat Imp
Book Worm
Cloud Gizmo
Lord of Bane
Witch
That's a pretty hefty list, although less TAs than I would've guessed. So what good is it? Simply put, if Granite is out, and a player draws any of the spells listed, it was essentially a dead draw. That's great on a basic level, because you're throwing a wrench in the opponents' plan in such a hands-off way, and continously at that. How many people have Gift in their book, or Crusher, or Heat Imp? Wait a minute, no one uses Heat Imp. Ahem. Anyway, what's really, really great about it is that it provides security. While it's down, there is a ton of stuff you just don't gotta worry about. Basically, your gold and your cards are safe and snug as long as Granite is down. You can walk around with 1200g without feeling like you've got a bullseye on your back. You can call Goblins out of the Lair until Hell freezes over. That Gaseous Form is gonna be there when you need it, guaranteed.
The downside of course is that your opponents get all the same security. Or do they? Certainly, the above cards are the simplest way to get the job done, but they're not the only way. If you want to steal G, try Rouetsoleil, Bandit, Amazon, or Jack-o'-Lantern. If you want to make 'em discard, try Deathquito, Bulimia, Crusher Storm, Erosion, or Ray of Law. Instead of making them discard, you could use other cards to render the opponent's hand worthless. If you're worried about the opponent's items, Paralyzer insures a successful invasion, Reflection or Fistfight can keep your territory safe. If you're worried about those cards yourself, Mass Phantasm, Desert Storm, Plague or Noble Shaman will take care of it, or just overwrite them with your own enchantments.
Having Granite down will probably render 4-12 cards out of an opponents book worthless, while your book does exactly what it's supposed to do. Creating a new book to take advantage of Granite Idol, or altering existing books to include it may surprise you, it's a very different feeling knowing there are a lot of cards you don't have to care about anymore.
Oh, one final note. Trade actually says target Cepter on the card, however, you don'r directly target the Cepter, you target the territories. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm fairly certain Granite will not stop it.
As always, questions, comments, and hate mail are welcome.
