This is the first in a series of articles going in-depth on individual cards. First up, Basalt Idol.
Basalt Idol (S) (NC)
ST:0 HP:20 G:50

Pretty straightforward, especially now that they've cleaned up the terminology from the previous game. Capitalized Terms are Good. I would note, however, that although the text says "creatures", this also includes spell and item effects which trigger at Battle End. Guess they haven't perfected this whole text writing business just yet. So what good is it? To know that, we need to know which cards are affected by it. As if on cue:

Conjurer and Spiny Agama are included because they create or evolve into creatures which are on the list.
For the most part, Battle End and Upon Defeat effects are positive for the user. The primary use of Basalt Idol is to counter such cards. Generally, that makes its inclusion in any given book fairly risky, since if the opponent isn't using any BE or UD cards it's pretty worthless. Still, if a certain type of book becomes very popular, and it contains the above cards, you know what to do.
However....there are some cards which have negative BE and UD aspects for the user, usually to offset a cheap G cost or overall power. This is where BI could be used to strong reliable effect. Nil, Wraith, Ba-al, Golem, Behemoth, Mutitan, Abyssal Tome, Death Choker and Mutation are the cards which become a lot better when BI is on the board.
Of course, using just one of those cards probably doesn't make it worthwhile to put BI in your book, but if your concept can fit several in, you might consider using it to streamline your book's effectiveness. The easiest example I can think of would be a book including 4 Conjurers and 4 Ba-als, throw in some Death Chokers if you need to knock over a high level land, throw in Nil because he's Nil, profit.
Card listings stolen from ExMortis's ps2 faq, edited for changes in Saga, new entries by me using the same format. Any questions, comments, corrections, let me know.
