This is more of a review of an opponents deck than a post about mine.
I played a 1 v 1 ranked match against "Docta Smooth" last night on Colassium 3. Not a very talkative fello that Docta.
My first impression of his deck was that he just put one or two of the most rare and expensive card in his deck: Nil, Leonight, Culdrablade, Terrar, Bistair, Flammfleur, Hell Pyron, one of every Dragon, Ba-al..... and so on. But then I started to notice that he did have a little bit of a theme going, mostly red and green, as he threw in some Fays, Barbarians, Coaliod and such.
I began to think, this guy is in for some trouble, as just picking the biggest most powerfull creatures and spells without any synergy is not going to work.... well some how it did manage to screw up my deck for a good 60 rounds.
My deck, a blue yellow offensive/parasite type, tends to struggle in the beggining of any match as I need to get some offensive creatures out there (Tengu and Frost Beast mainly). On about turn 6, Docta smooth drops a an idol that doesn't allow duplicate creatures to be put down (Granite Idol perhaps?). Well that completely confounded me for a good 20 turns. I usually spend my good spell cards on territories that I want to take from my opponent (Paralyze, Weathering + Tengu, Intrusion) but instead spent them all trying to beat down the damn idol. He did a very good job of fending my off during that time (stupid gasous form!).
Eventually I killed the idol, and saved an intrusion/saint combo alond with a paralyze for the next time he brought that out.
I'm not sure if his deck was good or if that single card just screwed me royally. As far as how he used his deck... well, it was almost as if he didn't know what some of the cards did. Thats fine, there are 500 of them. But he seems to have EVERY card so I figured he knew some thing about all of them. For example, he managed to get a Ba-al near some of my critical lands. I knew it was only a matter of time before he moved him over and started cleaning house, so exchanged my Wyvern out for a Frost Beast. He recognized the mismatch (no scrolls in his hand) and traded out his Ba-al for 40/40 First Strike Neutral Creature that gets you 5 symbols after battle. Good move, I can't reflect neutral creatures with frost beast. So I exchange Frost Beast for a Saint. I figure he will try to bring back Ba-al before I can attack his neutral creature. Instead, on his next turn, he lands on a tower, gets a territory command, and uses it to attack my Saint with his Neutral Creature, no scroll included. That was an instant victory for me. At that point I was thinking, this is just some 9 year old with losts of time on his hands who managed to collect every Massive R and E card and put it into a deck.
Either way, he some how managed to get to 12th online.
