I liked the warlock card, with his anti-magic territory ability, untargetability, and critical scrolls. So I built a deck around it! There are only 2 warlocks in the deck, but the deck is still built around the essence of the warlock...
Book Name: Warlock
Creatures: 20 (40%)
Possession x2
Barbarian x2
Cait Sith x2
Gas Cloud x2
Sorcerer x2
Luk-Oie x2
Noble Shaman x2
Saint x2
Sea Bonze x2
Warlock x2 (Fire/Water)
Items: 13 (26%)
Necro Scarab x1
Nuclear Fusion x2
Petrify Stone x4
Tearing Halo x4
The Hand x2
Spells: 17 (34%)
Drain Magic x4
Intrusion x2
Paralysis x3
Prophecy x2
Replace x2
Revival x2
Trespass x2
When I built this deck, I started with all the spells I thought would be useful in a competitive online game. Then I added in the warlock and a variety of red/blue creatures: a few with scroll critical hit, one of each color that's super strong on defense (gas cloud, sea bonze), one of each color that's untargetable (cait sith, luk-oie), and a few other specialty creatures (barbarian - instant w/ 50ST, saint to take care of greys, possession to steal strong lvl 1's before they get out of control). Every creature can use every item in the deck, and warlock is the only creature with a land requirement. The result is a deck that's pretty darn safe to play, and because not a lot of people pack scroll-heavy decks, most opponents aren't prepared to defend against them.
Best offensive combo in the deck:
Paralysis (doublecast) + Intrusion + Sorcerer = unavoidable death to any 30HP creature (or 45-75HP with a scroll item).
Best defensive combo in the deck:
Gas Cloud + Petrify Stone = opponent must do 160 dmg + 2x land effect to kill - and this combo still survives a critical nuke!
This deck is weak against creatures that get large stat boosts (avatars, mudmen, undines) and beefy armor. The best way to play this deck is belligerently, attacking with every chance you get, so the enemy can't develop a stronghold on anything. Revival or Prophecy if you need more sorcerers or scrolls. Keep the enemies from getting set up with their land requirements, use Replace to swap out enemies with powerful enchantments or abilities, or Posses them if they're still level one.
Possible changes:
- Might swap in 2 Clay Idols to help protect against the direct damage metagame.
... That's all I've got for now... I don't think I've lost with this deck yet - I think it's 3 for 3, having won an allied match and 2 FFAs. Great deck for allied matches, because who doesn't want a partner with crazy scroll attack power?
