The backward spell is often annoying when it is cast on our Cepter, but can be even disgusting when cast on another Cepter.
I was playing the Rabbid mission in Story mode. Pickett was absolutely off contention (he had like 500 Total Magic and already undergone a bankrupt). Ryvern had about 7800 and I had 8200. I was on my final way to the castle (Ryvern had just past it and was on the South Area Temple). A battle allowed Ryvern to take the lead with 8050, while myself falling to 7900 but I didn't mind, being in sight of the castle (only 2 squares left) and having a Manna spell card in my hand.
Then Pickett's turn came. He cast backwards on Ryvern. Ryvern then made a 6 and returned backwards...to the Castle... sigh...
A ultimate symbol for my unluckiness (does that word exist ?) is that I was awarded the Time Tramper medal. (Yes, three consecutive 1's...when over 8000G... sad, but true -_-)

Yup, that is unlucky, but its more so due to poor AI plays. Sometimes this works to your favor. Spoilers if you're still early in the game...
I just played Gamygin and Mullyn again for my 2nd character. During a turn, Gamygin landed on my ally's (i chose Selena) high tolled land and paid the price. On his next turn, he casted the Dimension Door spell on Mullyn (his ally), thus causing him to stay where he was, and he paid the toll again, this time having to sell off his lands! Also if you've played Whirlwind on Kazatega, you'll know that he likes to cast Influence alot. A couple of times he actually owned more green lands than he did yellow, and he casted that spell on his high tolled yellow land causing it to change to green. Although this increases his toll, it makes it easier to invade, not to mention i already casted Disease on that creature.

Yeah, I am convinced that the AI isn't smart enough to figure out whether or not influence will hurt it or not. In my experience the computer is pretty much 50/50 beneficial/not beneficial effects from Influence.

The computer seems to care more about chains than land bonuses. May be my imagination, but it seems that way.

I have to agree sometimes with the computers "thinking"- especially in regards to how highly they view chains. When I did the 3 vs 1- I had to break down and resort to a kelpie/willow deck. I put old willow on a Level 5 land and hoped for the best- I saw that Mullyn had Sinks and that Whirlwind had that spell that converts lands to Yellow- both of them consistently ignored casting the spell on the old willow to stop the quicksand effect and would continuously cast them on my other nearby red lands to lower the chain. It wasn't a bad idea, I guess they saved 300G by doing it- but wow, way to solve the wrong problem.
