I wrote a post here a long time back about using the Changling card, I wanted to update that with another twist.
I wanted to find out how well the Changling card works, as well as the Death Gaze card, so I picked a board where I was not forced to finish unless I wanted to. I picked Zagol's turf Dombwood (check spelling).
To start, the Changling card allows you to change two cards of your opponent to goblins...if you read the post I wrote on this about a year or so ago, this card changes ANY cards at random...it does not have to be monster cards, and I will prove that in a sec.
What this also means is that when you run out of cards, it does NOT replenish those that were changed to goblins back to the original card...the theory is, how far can you push this?
To add to this, I also employed a green deck, featuring Death Gaze, a one-eyed monster that can delete a creature card from the deck (80% chance). So the idea here is, how many cards can be elimiated from the deck if you played long enough?
That was the test. I played Zagol using a green deck, with Death Gaze, Mountain, Dwarfs, Tao Tai, and lots of protection for my creatures. I had a few other green monsters, plus some evil blasts, magic bolts, silence spells and some mana spells. I also used Wild Growth (changes occupied territory to green) and Dimension door.
I played for many turns, but waited until I had the game well in hand before I started keeping count of Zagol's cards. the first time I started keeping count, he had 48 cards left in his hand... meaning the Death Gazes was kicking in. He had 16 goblins, 3 thiefs, 3 Hornets and 3 Dragonflys and two of the following:
Cyclops, Power Bracelets, Bandit's Gloves, Minotaurs, Spears, Road runners, Levelers, and Morning Stars.
He had one card of 7 different cards.
The second time I counted after he cycled through his deck, he had 46 cards, with 20 goblins. This told me that the Changling cards were doing their duty as well as the Death Gaze.
The third cycle reduced Zagol to 42 cards, and of those cards, 19 were goblins. I know that might sound strange, but keep in mind the Death Gaze was eliminating cards from his deck, and that would also include goblins too. By then I had wiped his dragonflies off the face of the game.
The 4th cycle reduced him to 37 cards, of that 19 were goblins. I had completely eliminated his Cyclops, Leather Armor and Hell hounds. He still had 3 thiefs, 2 Levelers and 2 Power Bracelets, but everything else he only had 1 of.
The 5th cycle had him at 35 cards, with 22 goblins. Zagol no longer had any Cyclops, Bandit Gloves, Minotaurs, Dragonflies, Spears, Giant Rattlers, Leather Armor, Hell hounds or Spectres in his deck.
The 6th cycle dropped him to 31 cards, with 20 goblins. He had, outside of goblins, only 2 Power Bracelets, 2 Thiefs , 2 Levelers, and one of the following: Chain Mail, Beserker, Roadrunner, Fire Giant and Hornet.
The 7th cycle reduced him to 29 cards, with 21 goblins. His Beserker was wiped out, and other than having 2 Power Bracelets, he had one card of Hornet, Leveler, Fire Giant, Roadrunner, Thief and Chain mail.
But on the 8th cycle I learned something. It appears that there IS a limit to how many cards you can delete using Death Gaze. I found that after I dropped him to under 30 cards, I could not delete any more of his cards.
He had 29 cards, of those were 23 goblins. I wiped out his Roadrunner, and he had only one card each of those he had in the previous cycle.
I just finished the 9th cycle, and he still has 29 cards. He has attacked my Death Gaze about 20 times since dropping under 30 cards, and not once has the Death Gaze been able to delete his cards, so I have to assume there is in fact a limit.
As for the Changling cards, he has 23 goblins, a Power Bracelet, Chain Mail, Thief, Fire Giant, Leveler and Hornet.
The funny thing about the Fire Giant and Leveler is that in all the time, I made sure to use Wild Growth to change as many lands to green as I could, so by now, every spot on the field is green. That works against Leveler, because he can't be played until Zagol first establishes a yellow land, one that does not exist anymore. The same goes for Fire Giant, because to play him, you need to have red land, which currently does not exist.
Is is possible to change the remaining 6 cards into goblins? Maybe, since I have 4 Changling cards in my deck. But the way I figure it works, the card picks 2 cards at random to change into goblins. Now, with Zagol currently having 29 cards, and 23 of them being goblins, there is a greater chance that the two random cards chosen may actually be GOBLIN cards. If so, then the card has no effect. I have about 20% chance of the AI randomly picking one of those 6 cards to change into goblins... or have I reached the limit with those? I don't know.
I will try to keep playing to see if it is possible, but between cycles 8 to 9, I did manage to change his last roadrunner to a goblin, so maybe it is still possible. but for it to happen I have to keep hitting him with Changlings, and hope the AI will randomly select one of those cards into a goblin.
Anyway, something to think on, and intersting to test out.
