I'm fairly early in the game, just finished the three way battle with Luthien and Ryvern. Due to a limited selection, I'm forced to consider items I've never bothered with before. (Ring type items are nonexistant). The buckler is one I've needed to consider, and it has worked surprisingly well for me (on both defense AND offense), although I'm not sure how well it will continue to work. I have some technical questions related to this card.
Buckler (N) (I)
Armor G:30
Neutralize attacks of creatures with 30ST or less (except scroll attack).
On a rematch with Luthien, there are two cases where the buckler is extremely useful. First, it is a godsend against Nightmares and their penetration. Secondly, it allows me to successfully attack Nike with my Efreet, if I remember correctly. I believe items such as the buckler are based on the creatures' original stats, but I'm not certain.
First question, if she used, for instance, a lowly mace on her Nike, would her First Strike and Paralysis still be completely neutralized?
Second question deals with support str. bonus. Does that factor into whether I'll be touched by these creatures?
Third is if any certain abilities take place would change the outcome, such as that of the Amber Mosquito, or +5 str per creature destroyed in battle.
If understand things correctly, Buckler would defend me in most non-scroll circumstances. Theoretically, I'd be almost completely protected from
a). Master Monk
b). Decoy
c). Amber Mosquito
d). Werewolf/Cleric/other weak %death/%transform/etc.
e). a Trapezoid-ed creature so that that goblin turned into a Ba=al
f). Nike/Barrow Wight etc.
g). Spectre, even at 80/80.
I have a feeling I'll end up with a nasty surprise though, outside of certain items, of course. So to rephrase,
If the enemy creature's original strength on the pre-battle summary (in the case of Master Monk is that different from on the map?) screen is 30 or less, I'll be immune to any bonus attacks, as long as I am successfully able to use said buckler (not stolen, or so for), no matter what simple strength boosters they use. I also assume I'll be immune to creatures that have low strength and transform to something more powerful during that battle. I understand there are scroll problems and counters, but in general do I have the proper grasp of mechanics? And any idea at all how boost will affect the outcome of these battles? What is the result of damage reflection such as with the Decoy I hear about? And finally (and least important to me) any particular counters to this strategy?
To outline the potential uses for this card:
Cait Sith (now immune to 30- and 40+ str).
Neutralize all regular damage from growing creatures such as Spectre, Pyro Drake, Pyrallis and Master Monk.
Immunize yourself from cheap random transformers such as Amber Mosquito and Doppleganger.
Protect an important creature from Medusa, Werefolf and other transformers listed as a bonus attack. However, I probably wouldn't be protected from the Basilisk and Cleric type instant death creatures because this faq does not describe that ability as a 'bonus attack'. Does neutralization of the opponent prevent the fatality, or only the death of the enemy creature?
And finally, protect me from certain pesky creatures such as Nightmare and Nike.
I understand the weaknesses of the buckler, but its strengths at this stage of my collection are a great counterpoint to chain mail, which I keep on hand to soak up scroll damage, and allow me some unexpected versalitity even on the matter of offense. That is, if I've understood things properly. I'll fiddle around a bit more later, but I'm no expert tester of theories in this game yet. I'm still at the struggling to survive stage.
