Why is the Gem Of Life more expensve than a mace? does the same damage except to both people and only if HP is 20 or less. This seems like a shitty card? What am I missing?

Well, Gem of Life applies only at the end of battle. I could see a few advantages to this card - perhaps if you're fighting a corn folk or something, knock them down to 10, and then Gem of Life destroys the corn folk BUT the other player doesn't get their 250 G because Corn Folk wasn't destroyed in battle.
So, it works a little differently than a straight up +20ST. But yeah, you're right, it's pretty crap.

Interesting point. Yeah, I suppose I could see some usefulness there. I think it would be cool if more of the items had percentages of working. Like for example if you made it so that the Gem of Life could suck the final life out of a victim but it's likelyhood of working was based on the amount of HP left. For example.
More than 40 HP it works 0% of the time 40 HP remaining it works 20% 30 HP 40% 20 HP 90% 10 HP 100%
I don't think you need a ton of these percentage type cards because it kind of leads to a different strategy to luck ratio but a few more doen subtily would be cool. I don't have a ton of cards but other than instant death I don't know of many other percentage damage type cards.
