I FINALLY got my hands on the demo, and I'm rather pleased with it. The stuttering was a little unnerving at first, but I stopped noticing it after the first 10 minutes or so. The colours were beautiful and vibrant, the new art was gorgeous in most cases, and the localization is VERY professional. I also found myself enjoying the music, which is great, because I'll be hearing a lot of it. Regarding the AI, the computer performed well against me, even besting me in my first game. Though, that may have been a result of not having a creature for the first four turns. Overall, I'm impressed. If the minor stuttering issue can be resolved, I think it would be a perfect follow-up to the PS2 game. What a superb overview! Moptop, your impressions closely mirror mine, and I thank you for posting such a concise summary. The stuttering mentioned in this thread is not something that I would say I found to "bother" me, but instead, I was just a little surprised to find that happening. Given that the graphical requirements of Culdcept Saga are probably not as great as that for, say, Halo 3, I was surprised to see glitchy little problems like that in the demo. I've probably played upwards of 20 demo games now, and I still like to boot it up often to play another. Thesideburns mentioned "4 pre-built sample decks to try," which is an option I have not yet found within the demo. I look forward to being able to switch up my deck, and play another twenty or so games!

The pre-built decks are only available in the multi-player feature of the demo, as well as an additional level/board. The demo supports full 4-player local play, and the decks, while basic, are diverse enough to give each player a unique perspective. The stuttering persisted in the multi-player game that I tried, but it was less noticeable without the taunts and tips dialogue.
Unfortunately, I could not find a means of battling the computer in multi-player mode, so it looks like we're stuck with Santana Village as our only AI battle for now..

Looks like the demo is now available on the Marketplace! The rest of you have no excuse now. Go download it!

It sounds like some of the performance issues some of you were experiencing may have been improved by downloading the Marketplace version. Can anyone verify this? forums.xbox.com/17112677/ShowPost.aspx

I tried the downloadable version with the expectation that it would be better, but I didn't notice any changes. I'll clear my 360's memory cash and give it another shot.
UPDATE: I'm an idiot! I didn't realize that the demos on the OXM disc appear in the Demos section of the games library, and mistakingly chose to play off of the disc even after download it to my HD. After removing the disc and playing the proper version, I can confirm that it performs much better. There are still a few hitches now and again, but they're nowhere near as frequent as they were in the OXM demo.

Demo walkthrough on GameTrailers: www.gametrailers.com/player/28841.html Most people on this board probably won't learn anything new, but it's cool to see the game in motion if you haven't checked out the demo yet.

To be frank the AI in the game is atrocious. Outside of it winning by "cheating," the AI is quirky to a fault. It will make the same poor moves consistently depending on the character; character flaws which go beyond the character's supposed traits. It is possible this was fixed in the year delay it's had but I doubt it.
Also, in the jpn version the AI dialogue can't be turned off which annoyed me.
Also the slow-down and twitchiness was never fully rectified in the jpn version. So unless it's polished out expect a very minor amount of sputtering in the final product.
(EDIT) Having played the US demo a few things are apparent. First, the border colors of land are slightly different. In the US version neons are used while the JPN uses muted colors. I think the neons are way sexier.
Second, there is now a QUIT option available in addition to SUSPEND (for story mode). It would have been nice to have that before.
Third, the screen didn't seem to tear as much during gameplay but it was generally slightly choppier. This makes me believe that the US has V-Sync which is nice. Could be adaptive V-sync but I wasn't paying much attention.
Also the title screen is a different color (blue as opposed to red) and the font is different (since english requires more characters the typeface is thinner). The localization seems very professional this time around, though I think they're terminology could've been better.

That's interesting that they changed up the land borders. I wish they'd made green lands darker, though. Green in the PS2 Culdcept looked so much richer and woodsier...
Which is probably the silliest complaint about the game so far, hah. Can't wait for the retail.

so the dl is the same and even runs better than the CD eh? oh well can't say it was worth the $10 entry point but can't wait for its RELEASE
believe we have local co-op vs ais right? that was the bread and butter for the wife and I heh
having 4 players, diff decks, but no ability to turn on AIs was a bummer... man seems like the wait has been forever but now close to 2 months away!

Well the demo isn't exactly the same...
The version that came with OXM will disconnect you from Live. The downloaded demo will not.
So that proves they're different in at least one way. Whether the choppy loading of data in the background has improved or not is something we won't find out until the game ships.

While I was playing Versus mode in the demo I noticed that you can select a Virtual Cepter and Virtual Book. Does anyone have any ideas what these are?

While I was playing Versus mode in the demo I noticed that you can select a Virtual Cepter and Virtual Book. Does anyone have any ideas what these are? Virtual cepters are ons you create temporarily to play with in local versus. Specifically you'd create and use them for guests locally. The Virtual book option allows these guests to use the actual books of real cepters saved locally as opposed to them using the basic starter books outside of the sealed book modes. Virtual cepters are lost when you return to the title screen.

One cool thing about the demo is that you can zoom in and out on the board depending on your preference. You can do this buy using the Y button on your turn to go into map view and then using the right and left trigger buttons below the controller. I like both views, it is cool to see some of the details up close on the creatures and it is also neat to see more of the map.

It's also useful to use the LB and RB buttons to scroll through land info. In particular, while you are still new to the game it helps to scroll to the creature attribute info when you need to count colors, like when planning to invade a Mudman orbeing invaded by a Mothman.
You can also hit the Back button and go straight to the cepter information screen. For some reason very few japanese use that method.
