nope! totally optional, though its the only way to get one of the medals and unlock another character.

maybe I spent too much time getting there/building up/playing vs with my wife, but by the time I got past the colleseum (probably big sp there) with a little work I was geting past most obstacles..
You could make a 'zeneth buster' deck but probably some tweaks will do it for you.. get your stuff out early, have good items, and dont go with <40hp creatures [or cant be targetted] - I beat him 3 times in a row pretty easily and one of the time knocked him about for the medal, and najaran right after that with a streamlined deck.
it's a small map - get stuff out early and keep it, I'd have to check but I think I went 4 color and no more than one land requirement (most none).
