I had just finished this game and from the results, thought it might be interesting for a longest game post, so here goes....
I was attempting to get the Cosmic Mystery and Destroyer of the Land medals . I chose the Cratos 2 map, as it has the intersections where a Quake Beast can destroy the needed four territories at once. For my opponent, I chose Pickett, as he is not prone to invasion. Further, as he is playing Water and Earth, I hoped he would stay in the blue and green territories, leaving me red and yellow for my idols. (For the most part he did. He only went into the red and yellow to cross the castle/fort, or if he could make it directly to the shrine.) As I did not have the Roaring Fame medal yet, I thought to go for that as well, and set the goal for 90k. Three medals for one game would not be too shabby.
The deck I put together consisted of:
2 of each idol
2 Quake Beast
1 Astral Queen
2 Fairy Light
2 Feast
2 Mass Growth
2 Reinforce
2 Evil Beast
3 Magic Bolt
3 Fire Explosion
3 Thunder Storm
1 Greed
2 Old Willows
(The Astral Queen and Greed I put in there, just because, and the other three cards not listed were not played at any time in the game.)
And so it begins... I played an idol here, Pickett placed a creature there. Before either of us had reached 8000 G, all 11 idols were on the board, but Pickett had more G (His 7500 to my 4000). I had 7 red and 4 yellow territories, and went in for the coup de grace. On the yellow territory right next to the fort, I was finally able to place an Old Willow. Leveled to 5, then changed it to red. Okay, I thought, this should not take much longer. Well, Pickett kept getting hit by the Whomping Willow, but would not stay down. By using Echo, he kept grabbing enough G from me to not be forced to release all his territory. Soon he starting making use of Turn to the Wall, first turning my Old Willow to a Pillar of Flame, then the Astral Queen and Idols into statues. Since we were burning through the deck fairly quickly, thanks to the Brass Idol, I first considered replacing the statues with the missing idols, then thought I might as well leave the statues where they are, since they still count as my territory.
I put an Old Willow this time next to the Castle, in the blue area, again levelling to 5 and changing its color. As soon as I had the Old Willow ready, Pickett turned it into another Pillar of Flame. Ok, fine, be that way, so I replaced the first Pillar with yet another Old Willow. (After the second Turn to the Wall, I started keeping at least one Old Willow in hand for just such an emergency.) Pickett would move around the board, grab a territory or three, then head for the fort, and get whomped by the Willow, and sell those same territories back.
It kept on like this for the rest of the game, a war of attrition. Pickett and I were dancing around and avoiding each other's territory whenever possible, so wherever I had an idol or statue, I just levelled that up to 5. When I crossed the Castle for the 19th lap, collecting 5110 G for doing so (moving my G into symbols to keep it away from Pickett's Echo), I had finally passed the goal with 91,939 G, with Pickett having 6533 G.
So that is how it went, after 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 187 rounds, going through the book for the eighth time, I had achieved my desired goal (yeah, I had the Quake Beast do its thing in there somewhere, by using the Beast to replace the Ebony Idol to access territorial abilites, but ended with 11 idols on the board.) Pickett kept his one creature, a Remora, pumped up by me to ST:100 HP:100 (creatures will not go above those stats outside of battle). Even the idols and statues were around ST:70 HP:100.
All in all, the board consisted of my 11 idols, Astral Queen, Quake Beast, Pillar of Fire, Old Willow, Pickett's Remora, and the 16 statues that Pickett had my idols Turned into, with only two empty squares on the board.
Then, I finally see my medals! Cosmic Mystery, yes! Destroyer of the Land, all right! Roaring Fame, about time! Then Destroyer of Articles, for no items. Did not think about that one, but ok, four medals works too. Until Administrator of Fertility! Five medals! Fortune Bearer, for a chain of 12 red made it six. And Avaricious Smile, for exceeding 3000 G in a single toll. Seven medals! Go for three, get seven. I already had the Lucky Scale, or I would have picked up that one too. If I had REALLY thought about it, I would have included Death Gaze for the Exiler of Existence medal. Or If I could have gotten rid of that Remora, I would have also received the Unifier medal, but let's not push it, ok?
